The Kanata Sailing Club invites you to its annual 12 Mile Island Race on Saturday, June 28, 2014. This race is closed and for Kanata Sailing Club members only.
All dinghy classes are allowed, including monohauls (Bytes, Lasers, Albacores, Tasers, 29ers) and all multihulls (H-16’s / H-18’s, Hobie Waves).
This will be a corrected elapsed time race. Portsmouth rating numbers will be used to determine the handicap rating for each class and to correct actual elapsed time to corrected elapsed time for each boat.
There will be no entry fees.
Registration will be on a first come, first served basis on the morning of June 28, 2014, starting at 10:00 am. There will be no advance registration or reservation of boats.
Information for Racers
The race begins at KSC, the start line being that formed by the dock and an off shore marker placed 100 to 200 metres straight out. The route takes sailors north and west to 12 Mile Island and back. Sailors must go up one side of the island, rounding the island on the upstream side, and return on the other side of the island. Beware of shoals right off the islands upstream tip and several hundred metres upstream on the Quebec side. The Quebec side is shallow close into shore, the Ontario side deeper. A paddle can be used if conditions warrant it.
In past years, race times have ranged between 2.5 hours to 5 hours depending on wind, boat, and sailors’ skill. A cellphone in waterproof casing is a good idea to bring along, as is water, a snack, and a good partner.
We do need volunteers: two on the dock for timing boats, and one to go with our intrepid instructor Emily (who will be running the race) in the safety boat. If you are willing to volunteer, please advise us. Sailing is at the individual’s own risk. Although the safety boat will be out, do not count on rescue.
10:30: Skippers meeting on the deck (led by Emily)
11:30: Slower boats start (those with the higher Portsmouth rating)
12:30: Faster boats start (e.g. H16/18s)
16:00 – 18:00: Potluck dinner (bring your own food and drink) and medal awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
Please address questions and offers to volunteer to the sailing director, Mike Reece (firstname.lastname@example.org), or our head instructor, Emily Durward (email@example.com).
