Key Tag System

KSC has both monohull boats and catamarans available, and each type requires different skills and training to operate.  We employ a Key Tag System to track which boats are out on the water and to identify which type(s) of boat each sailor is qualified to skipper.

Tag Descriptions

Social/White tag: This tag has no qualifications and cannot sail club boats. It is either for social members or new members who have not taken one of the qualification steps below.

Yellow tag: Meant for junior sailors (at least 12yo) as part of a family membership to take out lasers and bytes by themselves with adult supervision.

Blue tag: Roughly equivalent to the Canadian Yachting Association’s CAN Sail 2 level. In order to qualify for a blue tag, a sailor must take a checkout by one of our trainers. A blue tag skipper is entitled to use all club boats with the exception of catamarans.

Green tag: Experienced monohull sailors with their blue tags can take an upgrade course to qualify for their green tag. A green tag skipper can take out the RS Cat 16 catamarans. This is a stepping stone to getting a red tag.

Red tag: Experienced green tag sailors can take an upgrade course to qualify for their red tag. A red tag skipper can take out all of the club boats including catamarans.

See the Qualification and Tag Rules section of the club rules for more details.
