Duty Day Sign-ups are Live

Due to some glitches with our sign-up provider it took me quite a while to get the sign-up forms updated for 2020, but they are ready and live now:

The duty day responsibilities this year will be limited due to the restrictions on our club, but we would still like members to sign up for at least one half-day timeslot this season. Only a subset of the duty day checklist is valid, so particular focus should be on:

  • Landscaping
    • Trimming trees
    • Mowing
    • Weed-whacking
    • etc.
  • Disinfecting common areas
    • Shed work table
    • Hand-wash station
    • Porta-potties
  • Picking up litter
    • Bring a trash bag!
  • Site maintenance
    • Minor building repairs
    • Check gas in fuel shed

And a huge shout-out to our members who are already helping out with site maintenance and keeping the yard & beach clean of litter. You’ve been a huge help this season and I just want to thank you all for doing what you can. You’re a large part of what makes the Kanata Sailing Club great 🙂

Thanks!

2020 Season in Full Swing

Weather is nice, the wind is up, and our members are out on the water! After significant delays and many additional safety precautions, our club is open for members and their families to enjoy. Currently there are a number of restrictions from the normal sailing season:

  1. Clubhouse is locked and off limits, contact a member of the board if you need access to the clubhouse.
  2. Those who wish to sail will need to bring their own life jackets.
  3. Gov’t mandated physical distancing and group size limitations must be followed at all times.
  4. Boats and other frequently-contacted areas must be sanitized before use.
  5. If you are sick and/or are close to someone who is sick, you must stay home.
  6. Training will not take place this year, but sailing checkouts will. If you need to be checked out to get your tags, please contact the training director to setup an appointment.

The club has put forth a Covid-19 Code of Conduct which all members must follow. Please adhere to this, your health and the health of our members depends on it!

Otherwise things are moving along nicely. There are a few minor issues, like the clubhouse is closed so we need to figure out where to dry sails, but we’re working through them one-by-one. If you have any suggestions/comments, please do get in touch with us, we would love to hear from you!

Keep your sheets to the wind,
– KSC Board of Directors

COVID-19 Delays

Like the rest of our community we’ve had to delay our club opening this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Some club activities and training programs will either be cancelled or postponed for later in the season. If you have already signed up for one of the impacted training programs our training director will get in contact with you to either reschedule or refund the training fee.

While we’re excited to get out on the water and enjoy the nice weather, we all need to do our part in preventing the spread of this deadly illness. We’ll be taking direction from the City of Ottawa as to when the club can open and summer programs will begin. The City of Ottawa lists impacted services/parks on their website here:
https://ottawa.ca/en/health-and-public-safety/covid-19-ottawa/impacted-city-facilities-and-services#city-parks-trails-and-natural-areas
Please note that both our club property and the adjacent parking lot are city parks.

For more information from Ottawa Public Health on COVID-19 and steps you should (already) be taking to prevent its spread:
https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-topics/novel-coronavirus.aspx?utm_source=OPH&utm_medium=Home_Page_Banner&utm_campaign=Coronavirus&utm_content=Home_Page_Banner_OPH

We will be continuing to monitor the situation and will be updating members when the use restrictions are lifted.

Keep well and stay safe!

Opti Regatta – Saturday, September 20th

As the season is sadly winding down, we have one last regatta at KSC, our Opti regatta, this Saturday,  20th September. This is a fun mini regatta where adults get to rig, sail and race our Optimists. We have about 10 of the bathtub boats, and the long range weather is looking reasonable and fairly warm. So if you are game for some silly fun in an Opti, come on out to the club for noon. Price: Free. Bring your own food and drink.
