2021 Season Updates

Membership and training forms are now live!

We’ll be offering both Adult/youth and Junior training this season! The upmost care and precautions will be taken to make sure all of our students are able to learn in a safe environment. To make that easier for our instructors we have shifted the regular training season to only include summer and late season sessions, hopefully this will avoid rain days where we would normally do classes in the clubhouse.

We do plan on having regularly scheduled race nights this season, as well as our usual member training programs (cat clinic, etc.). Stay tuned for more info.

Likewise we will announce the date for the 2021 opening day and we do plan on having a public open house like we did in previous years.

As always, if you have any comments/concerns, do bring them up with our board of directors.

We look forward to seeing you out on the water this 2021 season!

New KSC Board of Directors

We are pleased to share with you the list of our new executive board:

As you noticed, we have 2 positions opened and if you have any interest or questions, please contact our Commodore Corinne.

Also, Kanata Sailing Club have been nominated to the 2021 Faces Magazine Ottawa Awards , and you can show your support to our club in voting for this great special place and people:

Finally, we are wishing you all the best for 2021: health, happiness and lots of time on the water!

Duty Day Sign-ups are Live

Due to some glitches with our sign-up provider it took me quite a while to get the sign-up forms updated for 2020, but they are ready and live now:

The duty day responsibilities this year will be limited due to the restrictions on our club, but we would still like members to sign up for at least one half-day timeslot this season. Only a subset of the duty day checklist is valid, so particular focus should be on:

  • Landscaping
    • Trimming trees
    • Mowing
    • Weed-whacking
    • etc.
  • Disinfecting common areas
    • Shed work table
    • Hand-wash station
    • Porta-potties
  • Picking up litter
    • Bring a trash bag!
  • Site maintenance
    • Minor building repairs
    • Check gas in fuel shed

And a huge shout-out to our members who are already helping out with site maintenance and keeping the yard & beach clean of litter. You’ve been a huge help this season and I just want to thank you all for doing what you can. You’re a large part of what makes the Kanata Sailing Club great 🙂

Thanks!
-Devin

2020 Season in Full Swing

Weather is nice, the wind is up, and our members are out on the water! After significant delays and many additional safety precautions, our club is open for members and their families to enjoy. Currently there are a number of restrictions from the normal sailing season:

  1. Clubhouse is locked and off limits, contact a member of the board if you need access to the clubhouse.
  2. Those who wish to sail will need to bring their own life jackets.
  3. Gov’t mandated physical distancing and group size limitations must be followed at all times.
  4. Boats and other frequently-contacted areas must be sanitized before use.
  5. If you are sick and/or are close to someone who is sick, you must stay home.
  6. Training will not take place this year, but sailing checkouts will. If you need to be checked out to get your tags, please contact the training director to setup an appointment.

The club has put forth a Covid-19 Code of Conduct which all members must follow. Please adhere to this, your health and the health of our members depends on it!

Otherwise things are moving along nicely. There are a few minor issues, like the clubhouse is closed so we need to figure out where to dry sails, but we’re working through them one-by-one. If you have any suggestions/comments, please do get in touch with us, we would love to hear from you!

Keep your sheets to the wind,
– KSC Board of Directors

COVID-19 Delays

Like the rest of our community we’ve had to delay our club opening this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Some club activities and training programs will either be cancelled or postponed for later in the season. If you have already signed up for one of the impacted training programs our training director will get in contact with you to either reschedule or refund the training fee.

While we’re excited to get out on the water and enjoy the nice weather, we all need to do our part in preventing the spread of this deadly illness. We’ll be taking direction from the City of Ottawa as to when the club can open and summer programs will begin. The City of Ottawa lists impacted services/parks on their website here:
https://ottawa.ca/en/health-and-public-safety/covid-19-ottawa/impacted-city-facilities-and-services#city-parks-trails-and-natural-areas
Please note that both our club property and the adjacent parking lot are city parks.

For more information from Ottawa Public Health on COVID-19 and steps you should (already) be taking to prevent its spread:
https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-topics/novel-coronavirus.aspx?utm_source=OPH&utm_medium=Home_Page_Banner&utm_campaign=Coronavirus&utm_content=Home_Page_Banner_OPH

We will be continuing to monitor the situation and will be updating members when the use restrictions are lifted.

Keep well and stay safe!

Annual General Meeting – AGM

Annual General Meeting has been booked for
Nov 10th, 7:00 PM at the Nepean Sailing Club.

Everyone should come out to hear the updates from the board and see how we are doing. Come a bit earlier to enjoy dinner with your fellow scally wags. A few our our board members plan on retiring so we will be nominated some new members to the board. Please consider volunteering your time as a board member. Many of us are first time board members and it has been a breeze and a fun time. Secondly the club runs on volunteers and there are only so many of us. It may be your turn again to take up a directorship. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Race Night Results – August 28th

So no doldrums to speak of this August, as yet another windy evening arrived in time for race night on Wed. Winds came in from the south east and shifted right  to the south as the evening progressed with averages at 20 km/hr gusting to 30 and higher.

Battles ensued throughout the race course on Wednesday between the pros in the name of Ken E and Tom in the Albacore and Ken S in the laser, with bumping and gnashing of teeth and yelps of “STARBOARD”, “UP, UP, UP” and the term “Keel-haul” may have been uttered once or twice.  Some man-overboard maneuvers were practiced by Carla in the Byte followed by Corinne in the laser because you never know when or how often these skills will be called upon. 2 Hobie cats joined in the fun with Nathan and Annie, putting in a brilliant show for the evening, in fact I think I heard them purring at one point,  while Frank and Jean in the other Hobie gave a competitive chase.

Results are as follows.

Race 1

  1. Ken S – laser
  2. Ken E and Tom- Albacore
  3. Nathan and Annie – Hobie
  4. Jean and Frank – Hobie
  5. Corinne
  6. Carla – byte

Race 2

  1. Nathan and Annie
  2. Ken S
  3. Ken and Tom
  4. Corinne
  5. Carla
  6. Jean and Frank DNF

Race 3

  1. Nathan and Annie
  2. Ken S (forgot to protest pirates below)
  3. Ken E and Tom
  4. Carla
  5. Corinne- DNS

Thanks to the race committee:  Instructor Annie and her partner Amy for setting the course and to Liz who supplied us with the food including her delicious corn from her farm.

This newsletter marks the last race night for this year for 2019. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to make the races happen and to all the sailors who offered their skills and assistance to the new members learning to sail and to the old salts who are always looking for a challenge. See you on the water.

Harry Adderly 12 Mile Island Regatta – Sunday 11 August

The Harry Adderly regatta brought in a nice mix of sailboats to the event this year under 27°C and beautiful partly cloudy skies with a NW wind blowing at 20 km/h increasing at times to 41 Km/h down river.

Starting with a self timed start and finish between the KSC dock and buoy mark, from 11:15h – 11:50h, 7 sailboats set up river to round Allen Island (12 mile Island). Challenging wind conditions brought back the Wave after 2 hours and the rest found their way back from 4.25 hours to 5.5 hours.

The Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap scores were used to adjust the times and even out the results. The results will be entered in the Harry Adderly 12 Mile Island Challenge that is managed this year by Frank Boyaner .

Thanks to all the participants for coming out and challenging your fellow sailors and sharing in a celebratory “cold one” after the race.
